Join the Wing Luke Museum for a Teacher PD to break down elements of the graphic novel, Fighting for America: Nisei Soldiers, learn history, and help each other find ways to deepen our discussion with students on the world-changing events of World War II. These stories are based on six courageous Nisei soldiers from the Pacific Northwest. Recommended for those who teach grades 6 and up. Free but registration is required. What Is Home: Japanese American Stories from Omoide

This unique storytelling event brings local stories to Seattle Rep through the incredible writers of the Omoide group. Inspired by the power of storytelling exemplified in Seattle Rep’s production of Ovid’s Metamorphoses, this community partner event will tell the stories of generations of Japanese Americans in the Seattle area. From immigration to incarceration to innovation, Japanese Americans have played a vital role in defining our region and shaping Washington’s culture and history. Through all the stories, we will explore different facets of what makes a “home” in the face of unique challenges and endless resilience. The event will feature readings of memories written down by members of Omoide, poems, and In Shadows (2022) a special musical performance by composer Paul Kikuchi. This event is in partnership with the Japanese Community Center of Washington. Net ticket proceeds go to support the publishing of the next Omoide writing collection.

Join an engaging panel discussion on the incredible stories of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team (RCT) as the panel explores the artistic and historical perspectives of the 4Forty2nd web comic. Panelists include: Tony Moy, the talented watercolorist and artist-writer behind the web comic; Michael J. Yaguchi, retired Air Force Lieutenant Colonel and commander of the Nisei Veterans Committee; and Eric Pang, the curator of the Northwest Nikkei Museum. These experts will delve into the process of creating the 4Forty2nd web comic and share their insights on the representation of Japanese American experiences during World War II. Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival

Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival will take place on April 14-16, 2023, from 10am-6pm inside the Armory Food & Event Hall and the Fisher Pavilion. The festival is part of the Seattle Center Festál series. The festival is dedicated to increasing the understanding and friendship between the people of Japan and the Pacific Northwest. It features ikebana, martial arts demonstrations, tea ceremonies, kimono dress-up, children's activities, koto music, taiko drumming, and more. The festival was initiated by a gift of 1,000 cherry trees to Seattle from Japan's former Prime Minister, Takeo Miki, to commemorate America's bicentennial and the lifelong friendship of Japan and Washington.
