NVC Foundation Congratulates 2022 Scholarship Awardees

Congratulations to the three outstanding scholarship awardees of this year’s NVC Foundation Scholarship Program! 

NVC WOMEN'S AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP

Naomi Akiko Fina is the daughter of Mari Horita and gr anddaughter of Korean War Veteran and NVC Lifetime Member, Akira Horita. Naomi’s great-uncle, George Masao Hayashi, also served in the 442nd RCT during WWII. In June, she will graduate from The Northwest School in Seattle, and plans to attend Carleton College to study Political Science. Naomi maintains a 3.99 GPA. She has interned with The Densho Project for the past four years and is captain of the NW School Girls Varsity Ultimate Frisbee Team, where she was awarded Most Valuable Player in her league.

NISEI VETERANS COMMITTEE SHCOLARSHIP

TJ Okamura is the son of Tim Okamura and grandson of NVC Member, George Okamura. TJ is currently studying Japan Studies at the University of Washington in the Jackson School of International Studies and will graduate in June 2022. TJ maintains a 3.89 GPA while working as an employee for B.E. Meyers & Co. and is also enlisted as a member of the US Army Reserve. 

Beginning in February 2022, TJ volunteered as a researcher for the NVC Biography Project and continues to volunteer at the Japanese Cultural Community Center of Washington (JCCCW) during their community events. Through volunteering at the JCCCW, TJ has experienced the mentorship and support of JA community members, which encouraged him to continue his education into graduate school. 

COL. JIMMIE KANAYA SCHOLARSHIP

Tali Tamaki is the daughter of Steve Tamaki and Michelle Chinn and granddaughter of Tetsuo Tamaki. Tali currently attends Kentwood Senior High School and will begin her undergraduate career at Seattle University in the Fall. Tali plays an active role in leadership and mentoring as a member of her high school’s “Conk Crew” and Student Athlete Leadership Team (S.A.L.T.), all while maintaining a 3.98 GPA. She is the captain of her high school’s volleyball team and member of the Volleyball Club. She was voted “Most Inspirational” by her coaches and teammates and has used her role as varsity captain to mentor and guide students in grades below her.
