NVC Foundation President's Column

by Geri Lynne Egeler
April 2022, Volume 73, Issue 4

If I were talking to you, instead of writing this column, I’d ask for a moment of silence – in honor of our former Board member of the NVC Foundation and dearest friend, Kerry Taniguchi, who passed away a few weeks ago.

Kerry served on the Foundation Board for several years, always organizing significant activities yet deflecting the credit to everyone else.  Whether supporting the Foundation, the Wing Luke Museum, the IDEC, or Seattle Communities in general, he always gave of himself to better the lives of others.

In his article remembering Kerry in the International Examiner, Ron Chew described Kerry as a Community Icon.  He would walk through the Chinatown ID and greet friends of all ages and backgrounds.

For the NVC Foundation, he especially enjoyed dressing up as Santa for our Annual Children’s Christmas Party and being the MC for the Nisei Luncheon bingo games.  He organized many Community events at the Vets Hall, while also overseeing the annual parking lot clean up days.  Then of course, he enjoyed the Friday lunches at the Vets Hall with other members who came down to the hall.

The day before he passed away, we shared one of those lunches together with Kerry at the Vets Hall, where we enjoyed, of course, take-out food from Tai Tung.  We will all miss you Kerry, and thanks for being my friend and being the one-of-a-kind person you are.

Getting down to business regarding our current Foundation Board, several exciting activities and fundraising plans are being developed.  With the re-opening of the Hall, we are hoping to resume all our normal activities live and in person.  Also, new Committees are being established that can use your help.

For example, I am excited to announce that new Board member Tana Watanabe will establish and lead our new PR/Social Media Committee.

So please attend our next general membership meeting on April 29, 2022 at 7:00 pm.  Come on down and join us at the Vets Hall for the meeting, food and drink or tune in virtually online if you can’t make it.  We are looking forward to a fun and productive 2022!
