NVC Foundation Scholarship Award Recipients for 2020

Congratulations to the five outstanding recipients of this year’s NVC Foundation Scholarship Program. 
 

NVC/WAC SCHOLARSHIP

Kelly Jinguji is the daughter of Thomas and LeeAnn Jinguji.  Kelly is the granddaughter of Shig and Faye Tanagi.  She attended Liberty High School and is currently studying at the University of Washington.  At UW, she has a 3.75 GPA.  Kelly is majoring in Business Administration. Kelly was involved in the DECA program, journalism, Honor Society, and tennis in high school.  She enjoys mission work with her church and spends leisure time playing piano, playing ukulele and singing.  She also loves traveling, writing and cooking.

 

NVCF SHIRO KASHINO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

Hailey Hirano is the daughter of Cindy and Tim Hirano and the grandchild of Henry Hirano.  She attended West Seattle High School and is presently attending New York University.  She maintains a 3.35 GPA.  Hailey is in the Stern School of Business and plans to major in Statistics or Marketing.

Hailey served as a Junior Class ASB Officer and Earth Club Vice President in high school.  She was a member of the National Honor Society and played varsity soccer.  She continues playing soccer on the collegiate level at NYU. Her hobbies include photography, reading, traveling and outdoor activities.

Matthew Lee is the son of Dianne and David Lee.  He is the cousin of Danielle Higa.   He attended Kentwood High School and is currently at Arizona State University where he maintains a 3.76 GPA. He is studying Bio-Medical Informatics (BMI) and Finance. Matthew was on the Varsity Basketball team in high school and earned his Eagle Scout Award.  Currently he serves as the Treasurer of Students of BMI Club and volunteers 3 hours per week at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital.  He intends to graduate in 2021 and then go on to graduate school.

Mari Okumoto is the daughter of Angela and Yuji Okumoto.  She is the niece of Rian Ebesugawa.   Mari attends Shorewood High School where she has a 3.98 GPA. Mari keeps busy with work at Kona Kitchen, the restaurant owned by her family.  Yet she is able to keep her schoolwork up and participate in Varsity volleyball and track.  She also volunteers tutoring elementary students and works as a camp counselor.  She has helped her Uncle Rian on his many projects for the NVC Museum. Mari will attend either USC or UW and will major in Business Finance.

Devon Yamane is the daughter of Curtis and Juliette Yamane.  She attends Seattle Pacific University where she is majoring in Clinical Psychology.  She has a 3.23 GPA. In high school, Devon spent time with Lighthouse Christian Church Youth group as well as being a member of the Cascade Swim Club team.  In college, she has been volunteering as an intern with Jubilee Reach Center working with students in their after-school program.  She also works as an Autism Toddler Self-Regulation Research Member.  Devon enjoys being on the SPU Treble Choir.
 

The Scholarship Committee: Our members have served for many years, some from the Committee’s beginning in 1998.  Thank you for your commitment!  They include Wendy Coombs, Kris Hiraoka, Carmen Chan, and Diane Yoshihara.
