NVC Commander's Column

by Walter Tanimoto
December 2020, Volume 70, Issue 11

I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt Season’s Greetings and a Happy New Year!

I appreciate all you do for the Nisei Veterans Committee.  Your support and volunteerism directly contribute to the success of our veteran’s organizations despite COVID-19.

Thank You!  Earlier this month Keith and Mary Ann Yamaguchi, Nisei Lunch Chairs, and some volunteers gathered at the Vets Hall wearing masks and getting the annual prime rib Holiday Meals ready for takeout and delivery to the Nisei.  A shout out to Terry Takeuchi of Terry’s Kitchen for another delicious prime rib feast!

As we close out 2020, we need to take pride in all we have accomplished under the circumstances that are restrictive and adverse to large in-person gatherings.  The NVC has survived the COVID pandemic with your help and the community’s support. We have accomplished two takeout Nisei Lunch events, produced a virtual Memorial Day Service, participated in videos with the Minidoka Pilgrimage Planning Committee, raised funds, produced a virtual Veterans Day video, and continued many other behind the scenes activities to maintain the NVC administration and keep our building maintenance functions going throughout the year.

We all have another 365 days of opportunities to explore next year.  For a New Year’s resolution, I have to start thinking of some things that I probably will have a hard time keeping.  (Maybe exercising every day and eating brown rice instead of white rice – LOL!)

I am proud of what we have accomplished; I am proud of who we are as veterans; I am proud of the fact we are continuing the legacy and carrying it into tomorrow and beyond.

Remember those who came before us, remember those still serving around the world defending our freedoms, and remember those who are not here today.

I encourage you to take time to relax and enjoy your family, friends, and traditions this holiday season in a safe way, and I very much look forward to seeing you next year!

Season’s Greetings and Happy New Year – Year of the Ox 2021!
