Nisei Lunch for December 2020

by Keith Yamaguchi
December 2020, Volume 70, Issue 11

As the year 2020 ends, we can all look forward to better times ahead in 2021.  I think we can all reflect on 2020 as a period in our lives that has tested our resolve in many unexpected ways. Just the simple act of gathering with friends and family without having to choose whether to put ourselves at risk of COVID reminds us that the simple joys of life are so important. I will never take them for granted again.

A special version of the Nisei Lunch was held on December 4. It was a continuation of the lunch program started in March of 2015. The Nisei Lunch has always been held on the first Friday of each month and provided a hot meal -- and more importantly a gathering place for old friends to visit and “catch up” on the latest news.  Obviously, because of restrictions on group events during the pandemic, we have been forced to change the format a bit, so we offered a pickup or delivery option to our lunch program twice during the pandemic.

The Holiday Lunch has always been our most popular meal of the year, not only because of the time of the year, but also because of the meal served: Prime Rib with all the fixings.  We provided a total of 70 meals of Prime Rib au jus with creamy horseradish, green salad, corn, rice, and dessert. We even included a goody bag to each of our guests.

The Prime Rib was prepared by Terry Takeuchi, owner of Terry’s Kitchen in Bellevue.  The cake from Cakes of Paradise (dessert) was provided by Carla and Buff Kohler and the goody bags were provided by Carla and Buff, Shiz Kaku and the Tulalip Casino.

As always, our volunteer group does such a wonderful job of preparing the meals.  The group of volunteers was a little bit smaller than usual because of pandemic related social distancing rules and regulations.  I’m sure our regular group of dedicated volunteers would have taken part otherwise … maybe next time!

The Holiday crew included Terry Takeuchi, Kerry Taniguchi, Paul Murakami, Kathy Yee, Sue Beeson, Shiz Kaku, David Fukuhara, Geri Lynne Egeler, Lawrence Leake, Melvin Inouye, Carolyn Takei, and Mary Ann Yamaguchi. A special shout out to Walt Tanimoto for his excellent video work*.  Thanks to all!

On behalf of the Nisei Lunch crew, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Peace and Happiness for 2021!
