The Seattle Channel's story, "Shane Sato: Portraits of Courage" was honored at the 56th Annual Northwest Regional Emmy Awards in Seattle Washington, June 8, 2019. The Northwest Region includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and Alaska. The awards happen once a year and are for stories that run January through December of the previous year.
Randy Eng shot, edited and produced the story, which originally aired on January 18, 2018. Lori Matsukawa was the reporter for the story. It was entered under Historical/Cultural - Program Feature/Segment and was one of eight finalists in this category. This year Lori was nominated for two Emmys, winning one, while Randy was nominated for six Emmys, winning two. This is Lori’s second Emmy; Randy has received 10 Emmys over his 27-year career!
Shane Sato’s second book, The Go For Broke Spirit, will be released late fall of 2019. It will include the Seattle Nisei Veterans featured in the Seattle Channel documentary: Jimmy Kanaya, Shig Otani, Fred Shiosaki, and Shig Tanagi. In addition, the book will also include stories on George Kozu, Roy Kirita, and Mickey Hiroo.
