The NVC tradition of placing American flags at the graves of Nikkei veterans continued on Saturday morning, May 25th during the Memorial Day weekend at the Evergreen-Washelli cemetery in Seattle. With help from the Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of the Seattle Buddhist Church Troop and Pack 252, NVC members placed over 300 flags at the graves of our veterans. The majority of the flags were placed by the Scouts and their parents.
The flag placing event was organized by Craig Omoto and Rian Ebesugawa. Craig Omoto produced aerial photos of the cemetery with the graves noted on the photos. Rian provided the flags and metal spikes for placing the flags in the hard ground near the graves.
The Scouts and Cubs from the Seattle Betsuin were directed by Scout leader Gary Kato and Corey Murata. Rian and Shelley Ebesugawa collected the flags the day following Memorial Day.
