Supporting Our Troops

by Keith Yamaguchi
December 2019, Volume 69, Issue 11

I want to thank those of you that have made donations of reading materials, non-perishable food items and cash donations to our program to support the men and women who are currently serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Your donations are being sent to support a member of the Seattle Nisei Veterans Committee, Stan Seo.  Stan is the Commanding Officer for the 122nd Theater Public Affairs Support Element (TPASE) stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As of this printing, we have sent out three shipments of packages to 23 members of the 122nd (TPASE) in 7 different locations throughout Afghanistan and Iraq.  These packages included items such as magazines, paperback books, local newspapers, beef jerky, pepperoni sticks, assorted candies, cookies, hot chocolate mix, hot apple cider mix, Starbuck instant coffee packets; and in the Christmas packages we sent, we included gloves, watch caps, and socks.

Being away from home is always tough, however, as a soldier you understand that is part of the job that will never change. Being away from home during the holidays is especially hard, and the support of loved ones and friends is that much more appreciated. I can vouch for that. When I was serving in Vietnam during the late 60’s, I can recall how much the “care packages” from home meant to me and the others in my unit.  We always celebrated receiving packages from home.

I’m sure I can speak for all the men and women attached to the 122nd (TPASE) in thanking the members of the Seattle NVC for the packages sent from home.
