Sakae "Sam" Aoyama

Sakae Aoyama, age 99, died peacefully at home on February 25, 2018. Born in Seattle on January 29, 1919, to Naojiro and Suye Aoyama, Sakae graduated from Broadway High School in Seattle and business school in Chicago. Sakae volunteered for the U.S. Army, while incarcerated with his family at the Minidoka Camp, serving with the 442nd Regimental Combat Team, 3rd Battalion, Company M. He participated in intense combat in Italy and eastern France, including the heroic rescue of the Texas Lost Battalion. After the war, Sakae married the love of his life, Ruby Kawai, and became a CPA, retiring from Peterson Sullivan LLP at 78.

Sam was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruby, brothers Shigeru and Katsumi "Katchi," and sisters Tokio Izumi and June Yamada. Sam's memory lives on in his sisters Mariko Mano and Anne Moriyasu; brother George Aoyama; sons David (Karen) and Steven (Joyce); daughters Miki Conrad (Bob) and Kimi Reiner (Fred); eight grandchildren -- Carl Reiner (Cindi), Dana Aoyama, Mark Aoyama (Naveen), Caitlin Russo (Brian), Dustin Conrad (Cindy Mi), Zachary Conrad (Julie Tea), Hanako Imber (Kevin), and Midori Conrad; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
