Letter from Isami Yoshihara

March 2017, Volume 67, Issue 3

From: Isami Yoshihara (Hawaii)

I read the NVC Commander/NVCF President's Column in subject newsletter which was extremely well-written except for the following portion:

"The young Nisei men, many in their late teens and early twenties, volunteered or were drafted from the American concentration camps."

This phrase totally excludes the sacrifices of thousands of soldiers from Hawaii who formed the greater part of the 100th/442nd RCT and whose families with a few exceptions were not incarcerated.  Because your newsletter is directed more for people living on the mainland, it is imperative to present the total story so that mainlanders would realize that the sacrifices made by those who lived in Hawaii.

Dear Mr. Yoshihara.

Thank you for your feedback on our February 2017 NVC Commander/NVCF President Article in the NVC Newsletter.

Please know that we have always had and continue to have the utmost respect and gratitude for the soldiers from Hawaii who along with the Nisei soldiers from the mainland formed the 100th/442 RCT. One of my late uncles, George Eji was from Hawaii and served in Company “H” 442 RCT in Europe.  With that said, we will make it our effort to include in our future articles the contributions of Japanese-Americans from Hawaii and the recognition of the origins of the 100th/442nd RCT.

Please understand that the focus of our article was on the 75th Anniversary of the signing of Executive Order (EO) 9066 by President Roosevelt and its impact on the people of Japanese descent living on the mainland’s west coast.

We sincerely apologize if we offended you or anyone else by not elaborating on the soldiers from Hawaii who were part of the 100th and the 442 RCT in our article.

With your permission, I would like to place your email in our March Newsletter with my response so that those who might have had the same thoughts as you know what the article’s focus was.

Please let me know if I have your permission to print your email in our March Newsletter.

Again, thank you Mr. Yoshihara for your feedback.

Respectfully,

Rick
